 5. Summaries, 15 April - 28 April 2013

Week 8-9

Each class summarizes the answers received from other Learning Circle partners and post them to the wiki site.

Summary

IS1, Ahliah School, Lebanon

Thank you all for the answers. We loved and enjoyed reading every single answer; we even danced to some music posted !

Teenagers over the world have different taste in music; they either listen to mainstream international songs or traditional songs. The taste in music varies between each generation though it depends on the person and his liking seeing that even teenagers in the same country listen to different types.

Teenagers in Canada prefer listening to international songs especially music which originates from the United States of America, where there isn’t much local Canadians. However, taste in music varies in Netherlands where student in Isendoorn College like their music which makes them proud, whereas students in RSG’t Rijks prefer international songs because they find it awesome to listen to anytime and it has all kinds of music. Moreover, teenagers in Romania do not have a favorite where they can enjoy both because they like diversity and good music; it depends on their mood more often.

Most Polish teenagers prefer international main stream music over traditional Polish music. However, there are some Polish bands that created a link between folk and pop music in order to keep traditional music popular. Furthermore, in Macedonia, there are a lot of folk songs and folk dances which happened to be more popular among the Macedonian people fifty years ago. Folk songs and dances were passed through generations seeing that they are still remembered, due to the fact that they are taught and sung by specific associations. However, teenagers in Macedonia listen to international music more, they aren’t interested in folk music and dances but they do know a few easy songs and dances.

Again, each country and society has specific taste in music according to history, geography, and individual likings. Yet, we all like music and we all want to preserve our culture.

So teenagers listen to all types of music, some don’t have traditional songs; like Canada; which leaves them listening to international songs.  Teenagers prefer international songs over traditional because they think it suits them more, though the genres vary from one person to another it depends on the likings and the mood the teenager is in.

Summary

IS2, Newmarket High School, Canada

Hi Everyone!  Thanks for your answers- we collaborated our ideas using Google Docs to write our summary:

1. Explain why did we ask the question?

To learn and understand the different cultures and people

Because it’s hard to learn about different cultures unless you research them.

Sharing each other's life in a day through video , photos and recording is a fast way to give people a visual look on what each person’s life is like in that certain country.

We asked this question to learn about different cultures and how living in a different place would affect our daily lives.

It also gives good insight into how we are all different but yet the same.

We asked our question because we wanted to learn more about different cultures and to find out what was similar or different between all the countries.

We wanted to see the different points of view that people had about their countries and cultures.

2.   Explain what did we know about the theme (topic of Wiki) when we started?

We were going to learn about different people and their daily routines and culture

To compare each other through work habits and life variety, by sharing information about how we live our life.

We knew that the theme would relate to our media arts course, we knew we were going to be finding out about people in different cultures and the way they live through visuals and sound.

The theme “images and sounds of my country” was a very broad subject that was open to interpretation.

We knew our opinion of what it meant, which was the things we see and hear everyday, the differences in art, music and surroundings. But other countries or people may have had different ideas of the subject.

3.            Explain what we learned in our classroom by participating in this project?

That people all around the world can be similar to us

That different cultures are similar and different in several ways.

By participating in this project we learned more about different cultures and how people in different countries live. We learned that most Things in our lives are very similar but there were also very different aspects as well.

4. What did we expect to learn?

That the people across the world are different from us.

That different cultures have different ways to live out their life, and have their similarities and differences compared to other countries (i.e. schools in the Netherlands look more artistic, they have different foods)

We expected to learn about what it’s like to be a teenager in different parts of the world.

It was surprising to learn how similar our lives could be while also being totally different at the same time.

5. What did we learn from the responses of the international students about the topic, about them, about us?

They lead similar daily routines

Their daily routines are similar to ours.

We learned more about the similarities in the daily sights and sounds all over our world.

Holland is flat like the Prairies, and also has longer school breaks than us.

We also learned how similar our lives were and how teenagers all around the world have the same personality; we love our friends.

In both Holland and here, we seem to value friendship and chocolate!

6.          What was similar or different in the research answers received from each of  the Learning Circle partners/countries?

Different- takes an hour to bike to school.

Similar- Wake up early in the morning to get ready for school.

Their school was more colourful, and full of life. and they all got along.

We learned that everyone got up at roughly the same time, went to school and had similar classes.

Most of us had similar hobbies, and didn’t like going to school.

Our personalities were very similar.

We noticed that education was handled differently, such as schooling being mandatory in Canada, but not in Lebanon.

7. Explain why do we think these differences exist in the answers given?

Geographic- they live halfway across the world, their cultures are different

Because different cultures have different political, religious and educational structures, which sum up their lives and influence how they do certain things.

Culture, language, geography and climate can also play a big part in how there is so many differences and similarities between different countries.

Overall, it is the history of the location and what their traditional cultures do for the people.

Because we all live in different cultures and countries, and although our personalities are the same, it does not necessarily mean that our lifestyles are.

Answers in summary

-       What is the difference between the music style in your country and the music styles in your neighbour country? : In the most countries they don’t think there is a big difference between the music style in their country and their neighbour country except for the language. But the differences that we see is that Romania and Poland especially listen to folk music and the other countries (the Netherlands, Canada) especially  listen to American music (rap, pop, country, punk) and there is not such a big difference between them.’

-       What is the history of this music style? : The history of  folk music: The history of folk music is spanning two thousand years. The traditional ensemble is a trio. That trio use the instruments like: violin, viola and a double bass with the addition of a cimbalom in certain parts.’

-       What does your national anthem tells about the history of your country?  :  ‘In most countries their national anthem tells something about ( the struggle for) freedom. It is about the imoportance of being an independent nation,  Sometimes it is about an important person in history (for example: Willem van Oranje in the Netherlands)

Summary GTP

Our question: What is the importance of national celebrations which include use of traditional music and songs?

We didn’t know much about the theme when we started. That’s why we asked this question. In our classroom we looked at the links that were posted together with the answers. What we learned in our classroom was teamwork. We worked in a group, so you had to work together. We learned to discuss with each other.

We expected to learn nice things about the country and we thought that we would interact with other schools and other people from all over the world, but that wasn’t really the case. There were a lot of schools from one single country, Romania.

We did learn different things about their country. Like about their Easter, their Christmas and other religion celebrations.

The questions were all kind of the same. They were about religion and Jesus. Not really what we had expected, because we had expected more modern songs and images of their landscapes and not stories of Jesus.

It was overall a really interesting project!

We learned that you’re all really proud of being in your country and you also like the history of your country.

It was fun to see how much your answers looked alike. Of course we noticed slight differences, because of the different cultures. We think these differences exist because of the theory of evolution which tells us that people adapt to their environment.

Hello everyone!

Thank you for your answers! We are very glad that you are proud of your contries and you support your artistic values.
As a conclusion, we believe that in the entire world there are artists which make their native countries proud and bring a little drop of happiness in every person's heart, through their creations.
We want you to know that we heard about the Canadian artists presented by IS2, they are also known in our country. Of course we know about the Romanian ones and we appreciate them, because they make our country proud! From Netherlands we heard about Rembrandt, van Gogh, we also saw movies about him. Speaking of which, here is a beautiful song from the movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkvLq0TYiwI. We also heard about Dj. Afrojack, dj. Tiesto and Armin van Buren.
We are happy to find out that in this world there are also wonderful artists that we didn't know about. We didn't hear about the artists from Lebanon, about the others from Netherlands: Erik Arbores, Tim Versnel, Anouk Teeuwe and Ilse de Lange, about the ones from Poland and Macedonia.
Also we are thrilled that you promoted your friends - we liked their photos and we hope they'll get their studios.
We hope that you will continue to support your artists and to learn more about other countries' culture.
Thank you again for your answers!

Best wishes,

Summary

IS7, Gimnazjum nr 8, Poland

We come from different countries spread all over the world. We live in different climates, see different landscapes, with unique fauna and flora. What do you find most specific and distinctive about your country? Pick and describe five most characteristic places there, explain why you find them special and include some photographs.

In this summary message we would like to point out what we wanted to achieve asking our question. Before the project, we didn't know much about other countries participating in Global Teenager Project. We hoped to learn about new interesting places and animals from different parts of the world. Of course we could have looked it up in different guidebooks or on the Internet. However we wanted to find out what makes you proud of, and what do you find special and unique in your countries. Thanks to all your responses (and amazing pictures !) we acquired some knowledge about interesting  places in your countries. We could admire beautiful images and dream about visiting all those places one day...

In Lebanon we really liked Jeita Grotto.

In Canada we admired Toronto Skyline

From Netherlands we loved the picture with mills...

...and the one with "crazy cow" :)

Pictures from Romania were absolutely amazing, for example Transfăgărăşan Road....

.... or Decebal statue on the Danube, Boilers

And in the answer from Macedonia we read about a town called Ohrid and its beautiful lake

Uniqueness of our countries is a wonderful experience which helps us to broader our horizons.

Summary

IS8, COLEGIUL ECONOMIC BUZAU, Romania (teacher CERCEL CARMEN)

Living without images and sounds means living with a huge gap. This gap can’t be replaced. Images and sounds always add a special taste to life, and therefore really hard to live without.  Making us visualize the world in a clear way where everybody can see it, now images and sounds are main things that we need in our lives that makes our new generation’s imagination based on images and sounds, also media wouldn’t exist if images and sounds didn’t exist since media needs pictures, music … to make films, video clips, and produce them to the world.

The world without images and sounds would be very different from the one we live in now.  Daily tasks and activities would be nearly impossible to complete things like travel would be impossible and art would not exist.Life would be like the experience of a blind or deaf person, unable to hear or see would probably make everything terrible for me. It would be hard to give up that sense, and it would be difficult to decide which one of the two senses I would give up.

If you can’t see but can hear the sound what you hear can you invent a image how it looks but you not sure how it looks.Life without images and sounds wouldn’t be a life. We can’t imagine life without music, movies and pictures, paints... Although they would be just two of our senses gone, it would mean almost everything. You can’t do too much without these senses. There would be almost zero communication and without that we can’t live.

Here are some answers:

Anna:
"My life without the sounds and images wouldn't make much sense, without sounds, I could not calm down and without images I would not have imagination".
Kasia:
"Life without sounds and images would be boring and sad".

Dagmara :

"I think my life without images and sounds would be boring and miserable".
Joanna:
"I think my life would look sad and boring, because I couldn't see and hear anybody".
Sylwek:
"I think that my life would be very boring without music, and images".

Life without sounds and images would be horrible.. there would be no creativity, no imagination, nothing to admire. How would you feel if you were deaf or blind? It's almost the same thing. So I can't even imagine how it would be a life without sounds and images. It's hard to imagine a life without these two because I don't have anything to imagine...Life without sounds and images would be awful. Imagine cars driving past you, but never hearing the engines or seeing them. Imagine trees swaying in the wind, or your hair blowing everywhere, but never actually hearing the wind or seeing the trees swaying. Imagine never being able to hear your parents, friends or other people talk to you and imagine how it can be never seeing your family. Life without sounds and images is unimaginable unless you are actually deaf or blind.I can’t even imagine my life without image and sound.  I would hate not hearing my family and friends.

It wouldn’t be the same without music. Music is the biggest part of my life. I get up in morning and I need music to get me going. It makes me feel happy and energetic!  During the day, I listen to my Ipod at recess because it calms me down when I feel stressed. Life with no images and sounds will be awful, dreadful, and horrifying. I can’t even imagine life without images and sounds. Images and sounds are the world. Without them there is no world.

Summary

IS9, COLEGIUL ECONOMIC BUZAU, Romania (teacher DRAGU CARMEN)

How do you understand better the informations? Through sounds or images?

The opinions were very different.

For sure some of us understand better informations through images some of us through sounds.

We know that some of us understand better informations by images, some by sounds and some by doing something.

Some did an overview in our class and the results are like this:

20 % of us understand better informations by image

23 % understand better by sounds

30 % are more confortable when they have a task to do

27% combine sounds and colours.

We understand informations through both sounds and images. They’re both very important.

The sound offers us a powerful means of communication. Our sense of hearing enables us to experience the world around us through sound. Because our sense of hearing allows us to gather, process, and interpret sounds continuously and without conscious effort, we may take this special sense of communication for granted.

Also understanding images is a complex business because seeing itself is complex, the eye/brain system of information processing is complex, and the world is complex.

Noticing, recognizing, identifying, studying, and analysing are all different ways of interacting with an image. And there are many factors and forces that determine how and how deeply we get into any image that we see.

Summary

IS10, COLEGIUL ECONOMIC BUZAU, Romania (teacher PIETRAREANU ADRIANA)

Soon we will have Easter. What is the easter image for you? If you don`t have easter maybe it is a similar celebration.

This was our question….and we got very interesting answers.

Lebanon

For those of you observing Lent, the long slog of abstinence and reflection that also coincides with the last of the winter chill in the northern hemisphere will soon be over with the chocolate, feasting and springtime blooms of Easter...

A recent list is published worldwide features Lebanon as the third best place in the world to celebrate Easter. The list was compiled by “Cheapflights” and says Lebanese streets, shops and restaurants are decorated for Easter with chocolate eggs and bunnies.

Easter in Lebanon is celebrated by local Christian communities which form about 40 % of Lebanese population. People greet Easter by wearing new clothes or at least new pair of shoes when going to church on Palm Sunday.  Moreover, On Easter Sunday, many families make a special lunch which includes turkey or chicken stuffed with nuts and served with rice. The afternoon is spent visiting friends and family members.

Canada

In Canada we celebrate many holidays for many different religions. This upcoming weekend we are celebrating Easter as well as Passover (which is a Jewish holiday). Canada is a country with a very diverse population. Due to this, many holidays are celebrated by Canadians throughout the year depending on your religion and/or culture.

Netherlands

In the Netherlands we celebrate Easter with chocolate eggs, chocolate Easter bunnies and bread in a shape of a chicken. The people who believe in Jesus Christ, sing songs about Jesus Christ. The people who don’t believe in Jesus hide eggs, other people try to find them. Because it is a tradition.
We remember the arise of Jesus with Easter. Before the arise of Jesus, he was killed by the Romans. They killed Jesus, because they thought that he was going to be the next emperor of the Romans. We make Easter Palm sticks. Many people eat with friends or family with Easter.
A movie about Easterhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3UKd6LQKng
This is a Eastern Palm sticks->
With a bread in a shape of a chicken

Romania

For us, Easter means the most important holiday, because we are Christians.

In this day, Jesus is being born. We paint eggs in the traditional colour - red, which simbolizes Jesus' blood and we pray.

We prepare for Easter by cleaning our houses and baking a lot of cookies and making a lot of traditional food, which is, by the way, very tasty.

Kids are also expecting the Easter Bunny, but this is not a Romanian tradition.

 Poland

Easter in  my country is major Christian festival.  We have many habits connected with this celebration.

We begin to celebrate in Holy Week - special week that lasts from Palm Sunday up to Easter Sunday.

On Palm Sunday we take special "palms" (usually made by ourselves of willow branches or handmade bouquets of dried flowers.) and go to the church to remember the day Jesus entered Jerusalem.

On Holy Thursday we remember the Last Supper when Jesus Christ established Eucharist. On that day we go to the church and receive Communion in two forms - bread and wine.

On Good Friday we remember the passion of Jesus Christ. On that day we keep a fast - we don't eat meat and we can eat to heart's content only once. Some people go to the church to the Way of the Cross.

Then comes Holy Saturday. We paint the eggs, prepare Easter basket and go to  church  to bless the food. In typical basket there are: eggs, a sausage or some ham, butter, salt, a lamb made of sugar or dough, some bread and some sweets, like chocolate eggs or bunnies.

On Easter Sunday we have a big family breakfast. We eat mostly the blessed food from the baskets, but there are some more traditional Easter dishes: cake called mazurek and soup called żurek.

In some families children get presents: sweets or toys. In border Easter tradition may vary. For example in the west of Poland children look for chocolate eggs in the gardens. After breakfast ( and presents ) we go to the church.

Another Easter tradition we have on Easter Monday (Wet Monday). It's called after Śmigus Dyngus. We pour water on everyone we meet, especially boys on girls.

 Macedonia

Macedonia is an Orthodox Christian country. Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter later in the year than the Catholics and the Protestants. In Macedonia we celebrate Easter and it is one of the biggest holidays in the year. During Easter we boil eggs and colour them in different colours to make them look better. There are some contests in which the egg in which the best egg gets a prize. But the religious colour is red. In Macedonia we celebrate Easter from Friday to Monday, four days. The first three days are for the living meaning people go visit their leaving relatives. During those days the older relatives say “Christ is resurrected” and the younger people respond by saying “He has truly been resurrected”. On Sunday morning people start to crack their eggs from one another. Most of the times they go to close relatives and crack their eggs with them. On Monday people visit the graves of their dead relatives.

IS12, OU Kliment Ohridski, Macedonia

It was a pleasure to work with you. We really enjoyed this learning circle. We asked this question because in Macedonia people still know and sing our folk songs, however the younger generations like modern music more and are abandoning folk music. So we wanted to know about other countries folk traditions and if younger generations still are interested in your countries folk traditions.

We read some interesting answers about different countries. We had a lot of countries in this learning circle and we learned a lot. Some countries that were colonies and that people from all of Europe settled have mixed cultures. People there do not actually have one folk tradition; there folk traditions from all around Europe and other continents are mixed. Other countries have mainly one group of people and therefore one tradition. People there have a longer tradition and is less influenced by other people groups.

In Canada there are people from different parts of Europe. Before Europeans colonized Canada the Native Americans had their own communities and cultures, but today the Native Americans culture is mostly forgotten or a small amount of people remember it. So Canadian folk music is actually Native American music. However as European settlers come cultures from all around Europe mix in Canada. As people mixed so did their cultures and living style. Today people in Canada do not celebrate any holidays that relate to their ancestors. And also they do not have a specific type of folk music; Canadian people may remember some of their ancestors’ culture.

In Europe most people still remember and sing their folk music. People still enjoy singing and performing their folk songs and dances. In Europe there are several folk festivals a year in most countries. However every country has its own folk costumes. Every country has its own style of costumes, dances, and music which differ from other European countries in some way.

In Lebanon folk traditions are not very old. Most of the famous folk artist, from Lebanon, are still alive today. They have their own folk costumes, which some people still wear, a small number of people. The folk costumes from Lebanon are a mix between 50s and 60s costumes. However, most people do not wear them except for folk festivals.

Summary

IS13, Maple Grove School, Canada

Thank you for all your responses! It seems that in many places, musicians are more highly honoured than other types of artists, especially by teenagers. Some teenagers said that they would much rather listen to music than go to a museum to look at art. Others commented that they believe that neither musicians nor visual artists are valued enough, though most said that all artists, especially musicians are valued and appreciated.  In Romania, most artists are underpaid. In the Netherlands, the government gives out some grants to artists, but it was not known whether or not there was a preference between types of art.

The students from Macedonia told an interesting story about a young musician who was killed tragically. It seems that he was a very good person, who donated lots of money to charity. When he died, a memorial was put up in his name, which shows how much he was valued by his country.

It seems to us that although artists are valued, only a few very popular ones are paid well. In general, musicians are nowadays more highly valued than other types of artists.
